Few games offer the exorbitant freedoms and joyous whimsy that a timeless classic like Garry's Mod does. Imbued with the full breadth and capabilities endowed from the Source Engine and bolstered by a loyal community still millions strong even today, the people of Garry's Mod have created an unbelievable, amazing array of content over the years, from hilarious nonsensical memes to genuinely suspenseful, intriguing thrillers. Whatever your fancy, there's definitely a GMOD video on Youtube which attends it. But that's all an overarching viewpoint. What about my personal experience? Let's get into why GMOD remains among my favorite videogames of all time even today.
Having acquired Garry's Mod around 2017, I can safely say my near-decade long experience with the game's been nothing short of amazing. I've played on both singleplayer and multiplayer experiences, relaxing with friends or playing around with the dynamic NPC (Non-Player Character) generators which allow for constant warfare and action befitting a movie right before my eyes. Many gaming experiences proclaim themselves 'open world adventures' where the only limits are your imagination, but Minecraft, and especially GMOD are amidst the few that genuinely make every attempt to meet this promise. Through the 'Workshop' page on Steam, you're enabled to download playermodels of your favorite fictional characters or even totally new entities created by yourself or another individual, or downloading particular NPCs that you find interesting and enjoyable to interact with. Anyone from Team Fortress 2 mercenaries to Batman from DC comics are at your disposal to tinker with however you choose in whatever scenario you could feasibly dream of.
This segways perfectly into the equally varied plethora of maps the game offers one to play upon, not counting the default ones you're presented with- already providing an entrancing experience as one could find themselves having a fulfilling three-hour session of unrepentant fun on Bigcity alone, the workshop yields a whole universe (quite literally in several cases) of areas you could toy around with your innumerable creations upon. The Death Star? The Mushroom Kingdom? The Citadel from Mass Effect? All this are more are offered right at your fingertips if you choose to engage with them. For the game's price of approximately ten dollars, the amount of enjoyment one generates could outlast a thousand first-person shooters, providing you entertainment not for days or months, but rather whole YEARS of your life. Entire Youtube careers have been decided off ASPECTS of GMOD alone, from the engorged network of maps to NPC battles that one could orchestrate for their delight and amusement.
And if you're a creator, GMOD possesses the tools to sate you equally. The level, scale, and beauty of what talented individuals with an eye for construction and detail have accomplished through the game's relatively rudimentary engine and tools continue to ceaselessly amaze those within and without the community spaces of whence they originate. Simply search 'Garry's Mod Wallpapers' on any browser and you'll understand of what I speak. These are movie-level picturesque scenes directly taken from the game through only usage of posing, lighting, and other techniques one could learn TODAY on Youtube, and presented to the internet. Trust me, I was amazed the first time I saw them too.
Ultimately, GMOD lives up impeccably to the title of 'Sandbox-style Videogame'. Because it truly provides the player an unprecedented breadth of freedom and exploration that few other games could ever hope to accomplish. You can participate in a Multiplayer 'Roleplay' server that enables you to participate in a storyline or simply screw about on your own with some friends. Whatever the case, I can assure you that two decades after it's 2004 debut, it'll make you immortal memories that'll last the rest of your life. I highly recommend GMOD for any age-group, for anyone, anywhere in the world.
Thanks for reading, and expect more reviews and other Blog posts to come shortly, especially regarding that new Transformers film and many others. God Bless!
